Friday Sermon Text 2 February 2018AD / 16 Jamadilawal 1439H JAWI

Vibrant City, Prosperous Society

In conjunction with Federal Territories Day 2018 celebrations, the khatib today shall deliver a sermon entitled, "Vibrant City, Prosperous Society".

jawi_logo.jpg1 st of February 1974 is a significant date in the history of our country. It marked the creation of Kuala Lumpur as the Malaysian capital and the first Federal Territory, before it was joined by Labuan on 16th April 1984, and Putrajaya on 1st February 2001. Therefore, 1st of February each year is celebrated as Federal Territories Day

As a citizen of the Federal Territories, we must work together to develop the territories, so that they are prosperous and peaceful.

Allah SWT declared in verse 18 of Surah Saba ', which was read at the beginning of this sermon, and having the following meaning: “Between them and the Cities on which We had poured our blessings, We had placed Cities in prominent positions, and between them We had appointed stages of journey in due proportion: "Travel therein, secure, by night and by day."

The vibrancy of the Federal Territories is closely related to the well-being of the society within it. Among them is by making efforts to maintain the vibrancy and well-being, by following His guidance closely.

We cannot escape from facing various issues that have arisen. The proverb "cut your coat according to your cloth" requires us to choose wisely whether it fits our basic needs, wants, or the desires of a luxurious lifestyle. Islam emphasizes on Dharuriyyat (or the Essentials), Haajiyat (or the Complementary) and Tahsiniyyat (or the Desirable) that every Muslim must understand. We should plan well so that our lives will not be affected by such issues.

In addition, issues regarding religious deviation, collapse of morals and values, drug abuse, LGBT, sexual promiscuity, excessive entertainment, unnatural sex, immorality, corruption, oppression and many others, also contribute to the breakdown of society and crippling the development of the city we have grown to love.

The core of this foundation is inviting towards the doing of good and the prevention of evil. Allah SWT declared in Surah al-Hajj, verse 41: which means: “[And they are] those who, if We give them authority in the land, establish prayer and give zakat and enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong. And to Allah belongs the outcome of [all] matters.”

Islam places great importance on good hygiene and cleanliness in the life of every Muslim. It reflects the strength of faith and high values of morality.

Cooperation and commitment from all parties are indispensable, because cleanliness is the responsibility of the whole society and not the responsibility of the authorities alone.

Our cleanliness and purity may invite the blessings of Allah SWT. Imam al-Bukhari RH, recorded a narration by 'Alqamah bin Abdillah RA, in which Rasulullah SAW was reported to have said: َّ هWhich means: "Come to purify with full blessings, and those blessings come from Allah SWT”

In consideration of city dwellers’ aspirations of owning homes, the Federal Territories Home Program (RUMAWIP) was introduced to the Federal Territories in 2014. Under the programme, the Federal Territories Ministry has built eighty thousand (80,000) units of RUMAWIP in the Federal Territories, with fifty thousand (50,000) units alone in Kuala Lumpur.

To end the sermon today, the khatib would like to present the following takeaways for our reflection:

First: The vibrancy of the Federal Territory is closely related to the well-being of the society living within it.

Second: The core element of achieving prosperity for the Federal Territories is to invite towards the doing of good and preventing evil.

Third: The society and its leaders should always work together to maintain the vibrancy and prosperity of the Federal Territories.

Allah SWT declared in Surah al-A'raf, verse 96: Which means: “And if only the people of the cities had believed and feared Allah, We would have opened upon them blessings from the heaven and the earth; but they denied [the messengers], so We seized them for what they were earning."
